THE TREE'S LAST DAY

This magnificent copper beech
Is to be felled tomorrow
It has stood at the crossroads
For at least 200 years
Its massive bulk
Is awe-inspiring
Yet tomorrow
It will be reduced to lumber
To be replaced by empty space
Another ancient Lewes landmark
Lost forever
